These songs were conceived when Margaret was living in Houston and I in Hollywood (Florida that is). Two of the tunes were inspired by my trips to Texas and one by a long weekend in California. They have been fined tuned several times since and finally made it to tape this past year (Yes, tape. Sixteen tracks). The song relating to our trip to California has a story behind it. We rented a place in Topanga Canyon and being big Neil Young fans, one day, we decided to seek out the house where Neil once lived and wrote his classics “Down By The River” and “Cowgirl In The Sand.” With the help of Apple’s Navigation app, we began our trek. The house is on the top of a canyon and the road to the top was a steep, narrow, winding trail of aged asphalt that was a challenge for someone accustomed to the flat terrain of South Florida. With white knuckles and heightened anxiety, we made it to the top of the canyon. After locating the house, we were about to make a u-turn to get a closer look when a big shadow went bounding across the road several yards ahead of us, a large stealth-like creature with a real long tail. It happened so quickly, it took us a minute or two to gather our senses. When we realized what we had seen, we completed our turn took a long look at the house and went on our way. Mission accomplished.
